Sunday, August 18, 2019

Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos is excited to announce its 2019 annual “Noche de Gala” celebration. This year’s event will feature keynote speaker Sandra Cisneros, followed by music and dancing to the fabulous Grupo Vidal.

Sandra Cisneros is a poet, short story writer, novelist, essayist, performer, and artist whose work explores the lives of the working-class. Her numerous awards include NEA fellowships in both poetry and fiction, the Texas Medal of the Arts, a MacArthur Fellowship, several honorary doctorates and national and international book awards, including Chicago’s Fifth Star Award, the PEN Center USA Literary Award, and the National Medal of the Arts award presented to her by President Obama in 2016. Most recently, she received the Ford Foundation’s Art of Change Fellowship, was recognized among The Frederick Douglass 200, and won the PEN/Nabokov Award for international literature.

Her classic, coming-of-age novel, The House on Mango Street, has sold over six million copies, has been translated into over twenty languages, and is required reading in elementary, high school, and universities across the nation. Cisneros will be selling and signing books at the event.

The Gala will be held at the San Marcos Conference Center-Embassy Suites on Saturday, October 19, 2019. The evening will include a pre-Gala meet and greet for sponsors, silent auction, string and mariachi music and gourmet dining. Longstanding Centro supporters will be recognized for their contributions to Centro’s success.

All proceeds from the event will benefit Centro and help the organization continue the educational, cultural and STEAM-based programs for area youth. In addition, Centro provides numerous special events throughout the year. Recent public events include a community day with National Public Radio’s “From the Top” music program and a presentation by Diana Lopez, the acclaimed author of the movie adapted novel Coco based on the acclaimed movie from Pixar.

Sponsor tables are still available, and individual tickets can be purchased at Centro or by phone (512-878-0640) for $75 while they last.
