SMCISD board approves new tax rate

Wednesday, August 21, 2019

The San Marcos CISD Board of Trustees approved a new tax rate.

The board approved the tax rate at $1.3139 per $100 valuation for the District during Monday’s regular meeting. The newly adopted tax rate is $0.10 less than last year’s rate.

Despite the decrease, taxpayers will see a 2.25 percent increase in taxes because of a sharp rise in property values throughout the district. James Barton, SMCISD’s interim-assistant superintendent of business and support services, said at the meeting that appraisals throughout the district had increased by 13 percent from 2018 to 2019.

“This tax rate will generate more taxes even though it’s a decrease of 10 cents because of a large increase in our property value of approximately 13 percent,” Barton said during Monday’s meeting.

Home values have increased from $184,598 in 2018 to $206,095 in 2019, according to the Hays County Tax Assessor-Collector’s office.

SMCISD will designate $0.99 of the $1.3139 tax rate for maintenance and operations, while $0.39 is designated for the payment of principal and interest bonded indebtedness.

The board also approved the effective tax rate and roll back tax rate, which are $1.28 and $1.31, respectively.

The trustees also approved the acceptance of the certified appraisal rolls for SMCISD. The board approved budget amendments for encumbered goods and services, which included  buses, orchestra equipment and a mascot uniform; and for money received from an insurance claim for wind damage to several district buildings in the previous fiscal year.

The trustees approved the 2019-2020 SMCISD Student Code of Conduct, a board policy update, Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System appraisers for the district, approved a stipend change for 2019-2020, which is estimated to save the district $3,100.

The board pulled an item to consider acceptance of a donation from the City of San Marcos for 75 mobile radios, which are slated to be used in case of emergencies.  The trustees did not take action regarding the establishment and membership of a budget advisory committee.

The board’s next meeting is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. at San Marcos High School — 2601 Rattler Road — inside the Criminal Justice Classroom.
