Texas lawmakers are among the lowest paid in the nation, but one state lawmaker is trying to change that by tying future legislators’ salaries to the median salary of a public school teacher.
The current median salary for teachers is $58,887, while legislators make $7,200 a year, a salary that hasn’t changed since 1975. By comparison, the average salary in Texas is $67,321.
In November, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick made increasing teacher pay one of his legislative priorities for the current session.
