Tree giveaway set for Arbor Day celebration

Friday, November 1, 2019

Three hundred trees will be given away to San Marcos residents this Saturday during the City’s Arbor Day celebration.

Community members are invited to the City of San Marcos’ Arbor Day celebration on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Discovery Center, 430 Riverside Drive

Individuals who present a San Marcos library card or State ID Card with an address within San Marcos will have the opportunity to receive a free tree due to a grant from Apache Corporation, according to the city.

“The tree giveaway will include 300 trees, with 17 different varieties of trees including Bald Cypress, Bur Oak and Texas Mountain Laurel,” the city stated in a press release. “Trees will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis.”

The family-friendly event will also include booths, interactive activities, tree talk, storytelling for children and forestry badges.

“Our residents have demonstrated a long-standing interest in maintaining a healthy, resilient community forest in our urban area,” said Urban Forester Kelly Eby in a press release. “Our staff will be on-site to help residents learn which tree will meet their landscaping goals and be appropriate for their neighborhoods’ soil conditions.”

Details about a tree rebate program will also be announced during the celebration.
