Wimberley 2020 Candidate Forum to introduce primary candidates to community

Wednesday, January 15, 2020

Wimberley Democrats, Wimberley Indivisible, Hays County Democratic Party and Texas State College Democrats will host the 2020 Candidate Forum from 2 – 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, at the Wimberley Community Center, 14068 Ranch Road 12.

Candidates seeking to represent the Wimberley area for local, state and U.S. House and Senate offices will discuss their priorities for the office they seek, their proposed solutions, and their reasons they believe they are the best candidate for that office. The event is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

“Our form of democratic government is the ultimate expression of community values. In it, the governed elect members of their community to help enact and enforce policies that make that community safer, healthier, more secure and more capable of meeting the future successfully,” said Laura Ewing, president of the Wimberley Democrats. “We’re sponsoring the Wimberley Candidate Forum to provide both Wimberley area residents and candidates an opportunity to align with a value–driven vision for our community.”

Over 350 area residents attended the first Wimberley Candidate Forum in 2018. Sponsors of the event expect a similar turn out at this year’s event.

“We want to encourage Wimberley area residents to look past party affiliation and have a discussion about values — not party platforms. Too often, we use party affiliation as a shorthand method of identifying our beliefs, which quickly divides our community into sub groups and pits us against each other,” said Claudia Perez, of Wimberley Indivisible. “If we can return to a conversation about values — equality, kindness, justice, tolerance, transparency, good faith, fairness, etcetera — we can find we share a great deal in common with those whom we deem different. We are sponsoring the Wimberley Candidate Forum because those who are elected to these offices should represent the values of entire community, not a sub group. Voters should know more about the character and values of those seeking to represent them.”
