Rebecca Acosta-Ojeda opened a one-chair salon in downtown Buda 16 years ago and has seen that grow to eight chairs and 14 employees. Her Salon One 12 recently won a GRIT Award from Texas State University for resilience and adaptability during the pandemic.

Like many small business owners, the founder of Salon One 12 in this little town south of Austin had to adapt and persevere during the pandemic, but her version of a survival plan was a personal challenge and a lesson in adaptability.

A key portion of an $18 billion legislative package to cut land-owning Texans’ property taxes received unanimous approval in the Texas Senate on Wednesday, moving the long-awaited compromise deal along a fast track to the governor’s desk after months of agonizing negotiations among the state’s top Republicans.
Through the cooperation of Community Action, the city of San Marcos and Promise-Land Church, in excess of 100 car seats were distributed to families with children in need. Families needed to register in June during Children’s Awareness Month. Children and families got their seats on July 8 at the Bonham Prekindergarten School.

Going beneath to see, experience local nature
The number of prime working age persons (those aged 25 to 54) in the United States has never been higher. Simultaneously, there are labor shortages and about 9.8 million job openings. Various factors have been blamed, including the “Great Resignation” and low labor force participation rates. Not exactly!

Texas State University officials said that author Gary Nabhan will deliver the keynote address for the Small Producers Initiative’s annual Southern Family Farmers & Food Systems Conference, to be held Aug. 6-8 at the San Marcos campus.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded Texas State University a grant to prepare more underrepresented populations to enter the agricultural, natural resources and human sciences (FANH) workforce.
