Lady Rattlers pick up 15th win at Austin Crockett

San Marcos isn’t fun to play against.

The Lady Rattlers are allowing just 37.4 points per game this season, suffocating opposing offenses. The team’s only three losses this year came when the defense gave up 46 or more points.

The defense did its job again on Tuesday, when San Marcos earned its 15th win of the season on the road against Austin Crockett, 56-42.

“We’re a defensive team,” sophomore forward Faith Phillips said after San Marcos’ 48-37 victory over La Vernia on Nov. 27. “So whenever we get those steals, we can push in transition and get back and get the buckets.”

The Lady Cougars were held to just 31 percent shooting from the field and 24 percent from deep. The Lady Rattlers did a good job of earning extra possessions as well, forcing 12 turnovers in the win.

Though the teams were tied 14-14 after the first quarter, San Marcos locked down on defense, holding Crockett to just 9 points in the second and scoring 22 of its own. The Lady Rattlers never gave up the lead, outscoring the Lady Cougars 13-8 in the third and taking the win, 48-37.

Freshman guard Vivian Hernandez led the team with 18 points, followed by junior wing Miranda Lamb with 16 and Phillips with 12.

San Marcos (15-3) will play in one last non-district home game when it hosts San Antonio Cornerstone Christian inside the Snake Pit on Friday at 6 p.m.
