Arthur Don Purswell

Arthur Don Purswell

Arthur Don Purswell of Martindale, Texas passed away on Friday, July 27, 2018 at the age of 89. He was born Aug. 12, 1928 in Cleveland, Texas to Arthur and Gertrude Purswell. He married Marian Young on June 3, 1950. Don graduated high school from San Marcos Baptist Academy and obtained a bachelor’s degree from Texas State Teacher’s college. He enlisted in the U.S. Airforce in 1945 at the age of 17, and served in Central America.

Don was a visiting teacher and truant officer in Caldwell County schools until he became a teacher, and later assistant principal at Luling Elementary School. He retired in 1982 when he began working full time on his ranch. If he wasn’t at church, at home, or attending one of his grandchildren’s sporting events or productions, he could probably be found on his bulldozer digging up Mesquite stumps.

Don was an active member of Martindale Baptist church, and was usually the first one to open the doors on Sunday morning. He was also a member of the Independent Cattleman’s Association. Don loved dancing with Marian, his wife of 66 years, and was always interested in attending a good pot-luck dinner.

He was preceded in death by his sibling, Sara Moesker, and his wife, Marian Young Purswell. He is survived by his three sons and daughters-in-law, Rodney and Kathy Purswell, Clay and Paula Purswell, Don Jr. and Dana Purswell; her ten grandchildren, Sarah Nicholson, Leah Oliver, Katie Purswell, Rebekah Sparhawk, Nathan Purswell, Taylor Claiborne, Rachel Purswell, Cole Purswell, Joshua Purswell, and Caleb Purswell; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Family will received friends at Pennington Funeral home, 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, July 30, 2018. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 31 at Martindale Baptist Church in Martindale, Texas. Interment to follow at Memory Lawn Cemetery in Martindale, Texas.

Memorial contributions may be made to Martindale Baptist Church, 12351 Hwy 142, Martindale, TX 78655. Arrangements under care of Pennington Funeral Home, 323 North Comanche, San Marcos, Texas, 512-353-4311.
