Sunday, May 16, 2021

On the morning of May 12, 2021, Darlyne Marie Rossow Lowman died peacefully, with her children at her side. She was born on Mother’s Day, May 10, 1942 in Houston, Texas, to Mildred and John Rossow.

She grew up in Gonzales County. She lived in the country where she was a member of 4-H and won both cooking and sewing ribbons and served as the president of her 4-H club. In her youth, she served as the president of her Methodist Youth fellowship group…a relationship with the church that continued throughout her lifetime.

Darlyne graduated from Gonzales High School in 1960 and attended UT Austin for two years before graduating from Sul Ross State University in 1964 with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree. She spent 34 years working in the secretarial field. Her first job out of college was working for Humble Oil and Refining Company (now Exxon). She spent 10 years at Wide-Lite (now Phillips) and 20+ years at Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State) with several other smaller stints at various companies. She retired from SWT in January 2001 from the Vice President of Finance and Support Service office.

In 1966, she was working for bookseller Dudley Dobie, Sr., cataloging his book collection and producing mail-order book catalogs when she met her future husband, historian, and book collector Al Lowman. He often joked that she was the most expensive acquisition he ever made in a bookstore, but his most cherished first edition. Together, they spent 46 years of marriage before his death in 2013.

She is preceded in death by her husband and her parents. She is survived by her son, Todd Lowman; daughter, Cathy Northcutt along with her husband Rob; three grandsons, Grayson, Keller, and Griffin Northcutt; brother, Don Rossow, and wife Evelyn of Fredericksburg; brother-in-law, Bill Nicholas of San Marcos; sister-in-law, Rebecca Cultra of San Marcos; 2 nephews, 6 nieces and many cousins.

She enjoyed attending historical society meetings with her husband and traveling around the state while he delivered speeches. Together, they enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Europe, Canada, and Mexico.

Some of her other interests were reading, gardening (both flowers and vegetables), gourmet cooking and entertaining.

Darlyne was a life-long Methodist and belonged to the First United Methodist Church – San Marcos for over 50 years where she served on the church council, finance committee, Foundation, missions commission and was active in her Crusaders’ Sunday School class, a past president of Rachel Circle, and served three times as president of the United Methodist Women. She served in the food pantry, sold pumpkins in the pumpkin patch, and served lunch at the Cock House with the Methodist Women.

Other community involvements included the Junior Sorosis Club, where she served as secretary and president. She was a longtime member of the San Marcos Area League of Women Voters and at one point, served as their president. She was active in the Heritage Association of San Marcos and for many years she delivered Meals on Wheels.

The true secret of happiness lies in taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life. – William Morris.
