Nanalee ‘Nikki’ Young Childers

Nanalee “Nikki” Young Childers, 88, of San Marcos, TX passed away on Monday, Aug. 6th. She was born in Plymouth, IN on Nov. 19, 1929. She grew up in Plymouth and graduated from Plymouth High School in 1948. She joined the U.S. Air Force in January of 1951. Nikki met and married Billie Childers on Aug. 11, 1951 in Booneville, MS after a weeklong courtship. They met in the Air Force Supply School. He preceded her in death on March 3, 2009 after 57 years of marriage. Nikki raised her family on numerous Air Force Bases around the world including, Japan, Turkey and several bases in the U.S. She worked as civilian on the bases in which she resided. Nikki will be remembered as a hard working mother, civil servant, artist, grandmother and great-grandmother. Nikki was very shy and reserved. She was very particular and vetting of new acquaintances, but if she called you a friend, she was your friend for life. Nikki was an avid reader and taught herself, by reading books, how to knit, tat, crochet, quilt, sew, paint china and make pottery. When her husband retired from the Air Force, they settled in Austin, TX in 1975. She was a life member of the American Legion, China Painter of Austin and the Austin Quilters Guild. She is survived by her son, Bart Childers and his wife, Sarah of San Antonio, TX; daughter Bridget Dollar and her husband, David of San Marcos, TX; grandson, Zach Childers of San Antonio, TX; grandson, Sonny Wieland and his wife, Addie of Mission, TX; grandson, John Wieland of Sacramento, CA; and great-granddaughter, Elaina Wieland. She was preceded in death by her son, Brock Childers in 1999. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that you send memorial contributions, in Niki’s memory, to CTMC Hospice, 1315 IH 35 N, San Marcos, TX 78666 or Angels for Elders, 201 FM 3237, Suite 124, Wimberley, TX 78676.
