Why I oppose abortion, examined point by point

Letter to the Editor
Sunday, January 6, 2019

Editor,

Recently in the news the Supreme Court declined to hear two cases to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood. Although these cases did not involve abortion, Planned Parenthood does commit around 900 abortions daily and is funded around a half billion dollars annually by money from taxpayers. Now there are millions of people in this country who are forced against their will and conscience to support something they believe to be morally wrong. Over 45 years ago, the Supreme Court ruled to legalize abortion. Since that day till now, there have been roughly 60 million abortions. First, the Bible clearly states that a pregnant woman is with child. Second, that recent discoveries in science say “amen” to what the Bible declares. Third, I will seek to answer some of the arguments of those who support abortion. Last, I will close with a word to those who have had an abortion, to those who are contemplating one, and to us as a nation.

First note that the following statements from the Bible clearly say that a pregnant woman is with child:

“And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.” II Samuel 11:5

“Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.” Psalm 127:3

“Thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.” Psalm 139:13

“As thou knowest not … how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child.”

“And behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age.” Luke 1:36

“Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac: (for the children not yet born” (sic) Romans 9:10-11

Second, scientific discoveries verify that you have a human being from the moment of conception that acts immediately and decisively to initiate development that will carry on seamlessly unless interrupted by something. At the moment of conception, a new entity comes into existence having human DNA and other human molecules, its nature thus being undeniably human. The genetic composition of the new formed being is different than any other human that ever existed, including the mother. This disproves the notion that abortion is merely a woman and her body. The earliest human embryo is biologically alive fulfilling the four criteria of biological life: metabolism, growth, reaction to stimuli, and reproduction.

Third, I will not seek to answer some of the arguments of those who support abortion:

Argument: To make abortion illegal would take away a woman’s right. Answer: It is not right to kill anyone. What about the baby’s right not to be killed. This takes precedent over any right the mother may claim.

Argument: To make abortion illegal would cause unsafe abortion practices. Answer: Is it OK to sanction child murder just because some people might do it anyway?

Argument: To make abortion illegal would cause young women’s live to be ruined. Answer: We cannot choose one person’s convenience over another person’s life. The inherent right not to be killed always ranks higher than the alleged right to be free from hardship or inconvenience.

Argument: It is cruel to force a woman to carry a pregnancy resulted from rape. Answer: The baby is not the worst thing that can happen to a rape victim, abortion is. Brave women are coming forward in greater numbers to speak out against abortion and how it has negatively affected their lives. The website www.afterabortion.com has nearly 2.5 million post of women who tell of overwhelming guilt, nightmares, excessive drinking, drug abuse, promiscuity, an inability to form or maintain relationships, difficulty bonding with later children, and other ways in which they are suffering.

To those who have had an abortion, I speak to you as one who is a sinner in need of forgiveness like everyone else. We have all sinned and come short of the glory of God. Our guilt is real and deserves its penalty. But God in his love gave his Son Jesus Christ to die as a sacrifice for sins and whom He raised from the dead. John Newton who wrote the hymn “Amazing Grace” said, “Although my memory’s facing, I remember two things very clearly: I am a great sinner and Christ is a Great Savior.” The Bible says, “Be it known unto you therefore … that through this man (Jesus) is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by hi all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the laws of Moses.” Acts 13:38-39

If someone is thinking about getting an abortion, please do not go down that road. It will only bring guilt and regret. Ask God to help you. If you can’t raise the child yourself, you can use the means of adoption. There are people and organizations out there willing and able to help you. I have a friend whose mother was given the option to abort him. She was a Christian and would not do it. She gave birth to a premature infant who went blind in an incubator. This person today is an associate pastor, has a master’s degree in counseling, works in helping other individual with various disabilities in Disability Student Services at a university, plays the piano and the guitar, and has been an inspiration to many throughout his life. What a loss to this world if his mother had aborted him.

Finally to us as a nation, the Bible says that the LORD hates “hands that shed innocent blood.” (Proverbs 6:16-17) We are guilty of sanctioning abortion. We are suffering and will suffer more for it. We need to repent, stop shedding the innocent blood of unborn children, and cast ourselves on the mercy of God.
