Area Round-up: Teams heating up for playoffs

The quest for district championships and playoff berths are in full swing in Hays County as the area schools look to bring home gold ball trophies to their respective schools.

In girls’ basketball, the Hays Lady Hawks are the highest ranked team in Hays County coming in at No.13 in both the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 5A State Rankings and Texas Girls Coaches Association 5A State Rankings.

Hays currently is in the running for the 5A District 25 Title but sit tied for second place with the Leander Glenn Lady Grizzlies.

Glenn currently owns the tiebreaker between Hays winning 58-35 last December.

Hays will look to force a three-way tie for first place when the Lady Hawks host Liberty Hill this week.

Also residing in District 25 is the Kyle Lehman Lady Lobos.

Lehman will have a lot of work to in order to make a run in the playoffs as the Lady Lobos sit in eighth place.

Over in 6A District 26, both Dripping Springs and Johnson are also trying to break through into the playoffs in a tough district race featuring Austin Westlake, Austin Bowie and Austin Lake Travis.

Both the Lady Jaguars and the Lady Tigers sit in 5th and 6th place in District 26 chasing the Austin High Lady Maroons who are in fourth place.

With District 26 starting the second half of district play this week, both Johnson and Dripping Springs will look to nab the final playoff spot.

The Wimberley Lady Texans are in the driving seat for a playoff spot in 4A District 27 sitting in fourth place with a 2-2 district record.

The Lady Texans will look to force a tie for third place this week as Wimberley travels to Navarro in a showdown with the rival Panthers.

In boys’ basketball, the Johnson Jaguars are the highest ranked team in Hays County as the Jaguars come in at No.18 in the TABC 6A State rankings with a 19-4 record.

Johnson is in firm position to take the 6A District 26 Title as the Jaguars are tied with Lake Travis for first place with both teams having 6-0 district records.

Johnson and Lake Travis will tangle this week to determine the outright district leader.

While not currently in contention for a district championship, Dripping Springs is currently fighting for a playoff spot in 6A District 26.

The Tigers sit in fourth place with a 4-3 record and are 1.5 games up from Austin Bowie.

Over in 5A District 25, both the Hays Hawks and the Lehman Lobos will have their work cut out for them as both teams will look to regroup to contend for the playoffs.

Both the Hawks and the Lobos sit at 0-3 in district play.

Either Hays or Lehman will find their first district win of the season this Friday when the Hawks battle the Lobos.

Though the 4A District 27 race is in its infancy, the Wimberley Texans find themselves in the playoff conversation.

The Texans sit in fourth place in the district standings with a 1-1 record with a win over Bandera and a loss to district leader Boerne.

Wimberley will look to add another win to their district total as the Texans travel to Canyon Lake to take on the Hawks in the basketball version of the Battle of the Backbone series.
