Colton's Corner: November is football season

OP/ED
Thursday, November 2, 2023

Don’t let the early Christmas season get things twisted.

November is home to only two things.

Thanksgiving and football.

If you are a football loving son of gun, then November is the best time of year. In almost all levels of football November plays a significant part of the season.

At the high school level, November means only one thing.

Playoffs. After finishing the regular season, the best of the best start the unofficial third season as teams across the state via for the crown of state champion.

In Hays County, two teams are looking to accomplish that goal: Ranch Road 12 Rivals Dripping Springs and Wimberley.

The Texans, who won their third consecutive district championship, will look to defend their Region IV Championship Crown as the No. 5 ranked team in 4A Division II.

For the Tigers, Dripping Springs seeks redemption after falling short in the Region IV Championship game against Austin Vandergrift in the 6A Division II playoffs.

Both teams have a real shot at not only running the table in Region IV in their respective playoff brackets, but also have the opportunity to make that coveted trip to Arlington to play for the ultimate trophy in a state championship.

Shifting over to college football, all eyes are on the teams playing for their respective conference titles, bowl bids and beating your biggest rival.

In Bobcat football history, two rival games helped define the November season: the regular season finales against Texas A&M Kingsville and Sam Houston State.

But rivalry games are not the only ones worth remembering in Bobcat football. For Texas State, nearly all the memorable moments and plays in Bobcat history all have come in November.

Who can forget when Texas State defeated Sam Houston State in overtime in 2005 to win the program’s first conference title since the days of Jim Wacker?

Then, a week later during the Thanksgiving holidays, the Bobcats hosted their first FCS playoff game against Georgia Southern, where 10,000 fans saw the Bobcats defeat the Eagles, 50-35, to win the program’s first-ever FCS playoff game.

Or in 2008 when the Bobcats made the trip up to Huntsville for another overtime win against the Bearkats to win the Southland Title.

Now, Texas State will have another opportunity to make some November magic as the Bobcats host a familiar foe in the Georgia Southern Eagles this Saturday in an attempt to qualify for the program’s first-ever bowl game.

Transitioning to the professional level, not much can be said about watching the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day (unless you support the Houston Oilers/Houston Texans, which, sorry).

It goes without saying that no matter how much people want to shove the Christmas spirit down everyone’s throats, just remember this.

November is now and always, football’s home.
