HS Countdown to Kickoff: East Central looks to emerge from district cellar

Friday, July 13, 2018

San Marcos’ fourth and second straight road game will be against a longtime non-district opponent before the recent realignment.

San Antonio East Central hosts the Rattlers to open District 26-6A play for the 2018 season. The Hornets are coming off a rough 0-10 season but returning experience could be the key for East Central to right the ship.

“Experience should benefit the Hornets,” Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine wrote. “Head coach Joe Hubbard said ‘junior defensive back Damien Quick is an impact player who will lead a defense that includes senior defensive lineman Christion Kaufman, senior defensive back Evian Thompson and senior linebacker Mason Alvarado.’”

Leading the Hornets on the offensive side will be returning quarterback Charles Oglesby, who threw for 780 yards and eight touchdowns last season. His top weapon will be senior wide receiver Adrian Zapata. Zapata caught 28 passes for 280 yards with three touchdowns on the year. Joining Oglesby in the backfield will be running back Frank Lott, who rushed for 638 yards and four touchdowns.

Last season’s matchup between the Rattlers and the Hornets resulted in a 28-0 win for San Marcos. 2018’s game is set to kickoff on Sept. 21, at 7:30 p.m. inside East Central Stadium.
