HS Countdown to Kickoff: Rattlers look for first win against Smithson Valley in over a decade

San Marcos hasn’t beaten Smithson Valley since 2006 when the Rattlers narrowly edged out the Rangers, 35-34.

Since then, San Marcos has lost 35-7 in 2012 and 55-7 in 2013. Smithson Valley finished 10-2 last year while making a playoff appearance, and could be a tough opponent again this season with 32 players returning to the roster. However, the Rangers have some major holes to fill.

The offense will orbit around Levi Williams, a 3-star pro-style quarterback committed to Houston who threw for 2,111 yards and 25 touchdowns as a junior. He’ll be complemented by senior offensive linemen Ronald Copney, who’s committed to Texas State, and Logan Smith in front of him, and a one-two punch of senior tailback Marc Franco and sophomore running back Darlington Frasch with him in the backfield.

The difficulty for Williams will be finding a familiar face to throw to. Smithson Valley’s roster has six senior wide receivers and one senior tight end in Garrett Altman, but Jeremiah Gilliam is the most experienced of the group with just seven catches last season.

The Rangers’ defense is anchored by linebacker Thomas Zeug and defensive lineman Trey Witcher, who combined for 133 tackles as sophomores. They’ll need to take a step forward in order to lead the unit along with the senior pair of safety Ethan Hill and pass rusher Will Gibbens.

The Rattlers will head to Ranger Stadium for their ninth game of season against Smithson Valley on Friday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m.
