HS Countdown to Kickoff: S.A. Johnson set to bring strong team to San Marcos in week 2 matchup

Friday, June 29, 2018

The Rattler season will continue under the lights of San Marcos Toyota Rattler Stadium with San Antonio Johnson scheduled to visit for the second game on the schedule.

An early-season matchup against the Jaguars will prove to be an early test for the young San Marcos group. Johnson was chosen to top District 27-6A against competition that features San Antonio schools: Reagan, Madison, Churchill and MacArthur.

Leading the Jaguars will be the District 27-6A Preseason offensive MVP Mike Chandler. The junior quarterback is returning with solid numbers from the previous season with 1,401 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, 797 yards on the ground and six rushing touchdowns.

“Quarterback Chandler improved in every game as a sophomore,” head coach Ron Rittman said in an interview with Dave Campbell’s. “Junior running back Justin Rodriguez also saw some action as a sophomore and senior lineman Adan Cavazos will anchor the offensive line at center.”

Johnson is coming off an undefeated district run but concluded the 2017 season in an early exit with a 28-27 loss to Vandegrift in the bi-district championship. As the Jaguars look to bounce back from the early exit, here are some of the players to watch mentioned by Dave Campbell’s: Defensive back Jake Desmarais, linebacker Drew Nemec, kicker Brody Patty and Tight end Nathaniel Guyton.

Rittiman also added that some key returners and players from the undefeated junior varsity and freshman teams will be vital to Johnson’s ability to maintain a high level of play. The Rattlers matchup against the Jaguars will serve as the second of three non-district games head coach Mark Soto has scheduled for his squad.

Kickoff between San Marcos and Johnson is scheduled to begin Friday, Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. inside San Marcos Toyota Rattler Stadium.
