HS Countdown to Kickoff: San Marcos seeks revenge after New Braunfels’ comeback win

It took a 30-point second half from the Unicorns, but New Braunfels completed the comeback, defeating San Marcos for the sixth year in a row, 54-42.

Many of the Unicorns’ top playmakers from that game are now gone, including quarterback Ryan Redding (325 total yards, 5 total touchdowns), wide receiver Caleb Gonzales (3 receptions for 54 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown) and running back Zachary Yaws (59 yards rushing), along with 36 other seniors. New Braunfels will need many of its younger players to improve on 2017’s promising 6-4 season, bringing back just three starters on both sides of the ball.

Senior running back Piale Thomas, who caught one touchdown and ran for another against the Rattlers last year, will lead the Unicorns’ backfield. Senior wide receiver Ethan Duliban, who led both teams with five receptions for 95 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown, should be the top target for incoming sophomore quarterback Peyton Driggers.

New Braunfels’ defense will be centered around senior linebacker Farley Bevil, who picked up 12 of his 107 tackles last season against San Marcos. He’ll need to help lead an inexperienced group that includes junior linebacker Matt Littlejohn (two tackles, one of them for a loss), as well as noseguard George Marsh and safety Bryson Dyer, both sophomores.

The Rattlers will host the Unicorns in their eighth game of the season on Friday, Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m inside San Marcos Toyota Rattler Stadium.
