The Rattlers will get a running start into their district meet.

On Saturday, Sept. 29, the San Marcos cross country team took park in the Matador Invitational in Seguin, the final race of the regular season that featured some district competition.

The Lady Rattlers took off first. Senior Mary Finch and sophomore Eliana Hernandez led the pack. The former took fourth place with a time of 20:31 while the latter took fifth place at 20:47. The girls team finished in 11th place overall.

The San Marcos boys were next. Senior Anthony Lopez ran a personal best 16:44 to take fifth place. Fellow senior Travis Rounds came in next, finishing in 17:47 and taking 27th place. The strong times from the men’s side put the Rattlers in sixth place overall, ahead of district rivals East Central (seventh place) and Converse Judson (10th place).

“As a team, we are trending in the positive direction,” head coach Michael Morris said. “I have been trying new ideas as a coach and the team seems to be responding to what I am doing. Each week I am seeing us hit some stepping stones and the kids are starting to look and feel more confident about running and racing.”

San Marcos will look to continue its strong performances as they head back to Seguin on Friday for the district meet at Max Starcke Park.
