Texas State comes out on top in win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

Toshua Leavitt and Brooke Holle haven’t missed a free throw all year.

The former has hit 19 straight to start her senior season while the latter, a junior, has made all 14 of hers. The pair of guards each nailed all four of their foul shots Monday night to help take down Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on the road, 60-53.

Holle had a hot start to the game. Trailing 3-2 three minutes into the first quarter, Holle’s sister and junior guard Bailey sent a skip pass from the left wing to Brooke, open in the right corner. Brooke knocked down the trey to take the first lead for the Bobcats.

Two trips later, the twins ran the same play on opposite sides of the court. Brooke canned her second triple of the night from the left side, giving the Bobcats an 8-5 lead.

The Islanders trailed the rest of the first quarter and finally caught back up in the second. The hosts used a 7-0 run to build a four-point lead, but the streak was halted by a layup from sophomore guard Avionne Alexander. Still, A&M-Corpus Christi clung to the lead heading into halftime, up 27-26.

Sophomore forward Jayla Johnson took control in the third quarter. On her first possession, she received a post feed on the left block from Bailey, took two dribbles across the lane and laid in a finger roll on the right side to give the Bobcats a seven-point lead.

Johnson kept feasting from there, racking up seven points and two rebounds in the quarter. But the Islanders weren’t quite finished.

A&M-Corpus Christi used a full-court press in the fourth quarter to chip away at the lead. It worked to some degree, as Texas State committed five turnovers. But free throws down the stretch from Brooke, junior forward Jazza Johns and Leavitt kept the Bobcats out in front, sealing the 60-53 victory.

Brooke led the team with 13 points, followed by Leavitt with 11 and Johnson with 10. Brooke, Johnson and senior forward Zandra Emanuel snagged seven boards each, tying for the team high.

Texas State (3-3) will head north on Friday as they face Oklahoma State (4-0) on the road at 7 p.m.
