Wimberley takes Battle of the Backbone

The Wimberley Texans scored 45 unanswered points en route to a 45-7 victory over the Fischer Canyon Lake Hawks in the 12th annual Battle for the Backbone.

The win bumps the Texans to 3-0 overall while Canyon Lake falls to 2-1.

After stopping the Hawks on their first drive, Wimberley scored on their first possession as senior quarterback Cooper McCollum hit junior wide receiver Josh Limely on a 60-yard touchdown pass to go up 7-0.

Canyon Lake threatens to score on the Texans, but a massive fourth down stop by the Wimberley defense forced a turnover on downs. Wimberley responded by driving down the field and scoring by a McCollum 35-yard touchdown pass to junior wideout Christian Marshall to go up 14-0.

After stopping the Hawks offense again, Wimberley drove down the field and into red zone territory. sophomore running back Moses Wray ran for eight yards on the option pitch for the touchdown and extended the lead 21-0.

McCollum added an exclamation point to end the first half hitting junior Jaxon Watts on a 62-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead 28-0.

The quarterback added two more touchdown passes in the second half on throws of 62 and 41 yards as the Texans went up 42-0. A field goal added to the destruction before Canyon Lake scored its only touchdown of the game, ending the score at 45-7.

McCollum ended the game with 322 yards and 5 touchdown passes. He also led the team in rushing with 64 yards while Fray was second with 16 yards and a touchdown. Limely had five catches for 105 yards and 2 touchdowns, leading the team in receiving.

Wimberley goes on the road next Friday to Fredericksburg to battle the 1-2 Battlin’ Billies at 7:30 p.m.
