Delicious Mediterranean Fare downtown

If you browse the dictionary and look up the word Nostimo, you'll find its Greek in its origin and means, "delicious."

That's appropriate considering very near historic downtown San Marcos is the home of Nostimo Cafe, a Greek/Mediterranean influenced eatery, where the food is in fact, delicious.

The restaurant, located at 206 W. San Antonio Street, isn't huge thus it gives diners a "quaint feel," which isn't bad.

Upon entering you're greeted by an friendly, attentive wait staff.

The restaurant is clean and adorned simply with what one might expect from a Greek/Mediterranean bistro with traditional blue and white colors.

Nostimo has a good menu selection which includes daily lunch specials.

I chose the traditional Greek Gyro from the lunch menu which came with shaved beef and lamb served on a pillow soft pita and topped with onions and tomatoes. Then the creamy tzatziki sauce, served on the side, was the perfect start to the dining experience. But, if that wasn't enough, it also came with well-seasoned french fries that could be eaten by themselves, with the tzatziki or ketchup. 

I opted for water and kept the meal at a bargain for just $7.49.

The falafel appetizer, served on a bed of spinach, onions and tomato with a dish of cucumber yoghurt and pita.

If you're a fan of the falafel they've got them. It's also served on a soft pita with fresh spinach, tomatoes, onions and Greek tzatziki sauce. The lunch portion's just $7.49, too.

In keeping with the Greek food theme, the restaurant serves a lamb burger topped with feta, Greek tzatziki, onions and tomatoes. Or try the Zeus, an all beef patty topped with shaved gyro meat along with onions and tomatoes. 

But never fear. If Greek food doesn't tickle your culinary palate, the restaurant also serves a traditional, classic-style burger, for just $7.95. 

Nostimo also has a great kids menu. And as for dessert, don't leave without trying the Greek Baklava for $4.50. 

Nostimo Cafe is open Monday thru Saturday from 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. - 9 p.m.
