A disturbing text message led to the arrest of an Austin man police say had held a San Marcos woman against her will for more than 24 hours and had repeatedly assaulted her.

The SWAT and Crisis Negotiation Teams and police detectives were assembled Tuesday night for a possible hostage situation at the Palm Apartments on Thorpe Lane; however, after telephone contact was made the suspect, 23-year-old Timothy Gomez, was taken into custody without incident.

After his arrest, police located the victim, who was said to have visible injuries from assaults at the hands of Gomez, who was described as her ex-boyfriend.

The city said in a press release that a text message triggered a welfare concern that was exacerbated after police learned Gomez had an active arrest warrant out of Caldwell County for burglary of a habitation with intent to commit a felony. The release also said that Gomez “was known to carry weapons and be violent.”

Gomez is being held in Hays County Jail under bonds totaling $290,000. The investigation is continuing.

Also Tuesday night, police responded to a robbery alarm at the Starbuck’s on Centerpoint Road, where a robbery had just occurred.

The suspect, who fled before police arrived, reportedly brandished a handgun during the robbery as at least three employees were present. He was described as a black male of unknown age, approximately 5 foot, 6 inches tall wearing jeans, a dark blue hooded sweatshirt and black gloves. He also had a dark blue bandana concealing his face.

Police said they may, at a later date, release photos and/or video of the suspect inside the coffee shop.
