City’s sales tax rebate soars

San Marcos’ monthly sales tax allocation shot up to nearly $2.6 million this month, representing a whopping increase of 25.47 percent when compared to July of last year. The city is even farther ahead — 32.74 percent — in year-to-date payments.

It was the largest monthly increase for any of Hays County’s 10 taxing municipalities, the office of Comptroller Glen Hegar said. Only tiny Mountain City had a greater monthly increase, at 26.79 percent.

The next biggest increases occurred in Dripping Springs (18.34 percent) and Buda (18.32 percent); while other entities in double digits were Kyle at 13.44 percent, Niederwald at 16.62 percent and Woodcreek at 11.87 percent.

Uhland saw an increase of 7.7 percent. 

The county’s remaining municipalities saw decreases, the largest of which was in Hays City (17.15 percent). Wimberley was short by 1.74 percent.

Statewide, Hegar’s office said, payments to taxing entities were up by 10.75 percent for the month and 7.88 percent for the year.

Buda, Kyle, San Marcos and Uhland have sales tax rates of 1.5 percent. Dripping Springs has a sales tax rate of 1.25 percent while Hays City, Mountain City, Niederwald, Wimberley and Woodcreek all have sales tax rates of 1 percent.
