Taking bike-sharing for a spin

Too much traffic and too few parking spaces should no longer present the problems they once did in San Marcos — not if you’re willing to put forth a little muscle power.

Last Thursday the city and Texas State University collaboratively launched the city’s first bike sharing program intended to bring “affordable, convenient” access throughout the community.

VeoRide, a company based in Indiana, is providing the customized bicycles at no cost to either sponsoring entity. For riders the cost is low, as little as 50 cents for 15 minutes of use.

The system is dockless, meaning potential riders can use their smart phones to locate an available bike, all of which feature sturdy construction, built-in safety features and three gears. Dockless bikes also afford riders more freedom to go where they want without having to return the bike to its previous location. 

Riders can either pay as they go with rates starting at 50 cents for 15 minutes or they can purchase a day pass ($6.99). Also available are plans for $25.99 per month or $99.99 annually (which includes unlimited 30-minute rides). Students attending Texas State may also qualify for discounts on monthly and annual plans.

Those wanting to rent a bike must first download the VeoRide app in order to locate a bike, then use Bluetooth to scan the QR code or enter the bike’s ID to unlock it. When finished, the rider can park at one of several designated parking locations the app identifies, then push a button to lock the bike at the trip’s end.
