Bobcats down Louisiana in road match

Texas State picked up a key road win in its quest for a Sun Belt championship. The Bobcats defeated Louisiana, 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-18, 25-15), on Sunday inside Earl K. Long Gym in Lafayette, La. 

The Ragin’ Cajuns were one of two teams to defeat Texas State during conference play last season. With the win over Louisiana, the Bobcats are on a six-match winning streak. 

Texas State (11-5, 2-0 Sun Belt) jumped out to a quick lead over the Ragin’ Cajuns (9-7, 1-1). The Bobcats claimed the first five points of the opening set. Louisiana fought its way back into the frame by cutting the deficit down to 12-9. But Texas State used a 5-0 run to push its advantage out to 17-9. The Bobcats won the first set, 25-17.

The Ragin’ Cajuns evened the match with a 25-22 second-set. The frame was a back-and-forth affair with 10 ties. Following a 12-12 tie, Louisiana went on a 6-2 run to claim an 18-14 lead. Texas State fought its way to 21-20, but the Ragin’ Cajuns did enough to take the second set. 

The Bobcats had the momentum in the third set. Texas State held a 10-6 lead then a 14-7 advantage. The Bobcats saw themselves with a 20-11 lead and closed out the period with a 25-18 win and took a 2-1 match advantage into the fourth set. 

Texas State eased its way to victory in the fourth set. The Bobcats held a small 7-5 advantage, but Texas State used a 9-3 run to push the lead out to 16-8. The Bobcats held Louisiana in check throughout the frame and secured a 25-15 fourth-set win and earned their second win in conference play. 

Senior outside hitter Amy Plfughaupt recorded a match-high 19 kills. Senior middle blocker Madison Daigle tallied 14 kills, freshman outside hitter Janell Fitzgerald amassed 13 kills and junior outside hitter/setter Cheyenne Huskey had 10 kills. 

Sophomore middle blocker Tyeranee Scott tied a school record for best hitting percentage in a single match at .900 with nine kills on 10 swings. 

Freshman setter Emily DeWalt recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 53 assists and 14 digs against the Ragin’ Cajuns. 

The Bobcats return to Strahan Arena against Little Rock (10-5, 2-0) on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
