Update (9:32 a.m.): A San Marcos Police Department officer was struck by a vehicle Saturday night while responding to call on northbound Interstate 35.

Officer Claudia Cormier suffered life-threatening injuries after she was hit by a 2000 Ford Expedition driven by Neil Sheehan, 58 of Flower Mound, who was arrested for intoxication assault on a public servant — a second-degree felony — and failure to slow causing serious bodily injury, according to a press release.

Cormier was transported to Ascension Seton Hays medical center, where she underwent emergency surgery. She is in stable condition but sedated pending further surgeries, officials said.

“The San Marcos Police Department appreciates all concerns and well-wishes and asks for prayers for Officer Cormier’s recovery and for her family in their time of need,” the City of San Marcos’ press release said.

Cormier, a 3-year SMPD veteran, responded to a call about a traffic hazard with items in the roadway north of the McCarty Overpass near mile marker 202 on Saturday at 9:45 p.m.

San Marcos Police Dispatch began receiving calls shortly after that an officer had been hit by a vehicle in the same area. Police responded and found Cormier with severe injuries after she was hit by Sheehan's vehicle.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers assisted SMPD in the investigation and arrested Sheehan. Troopers obtained a warrant for Sheehan’s blood and results are pending. Sheehan was transported and booked into the Hays County Jail.

San Marcos Police Collision Investigation Team and Texas DPS State Crash Team are jointly investigating the incident.
