Foodie Friday: Herbert's Taco Hut

If you’re looking for a gooey, cheesy and delightful enchilada paired with refried beans and rice then Herbert’s Taco Hut is just the spot.

Herbert’s — a well-known San Marcos staple — is a favorite among San Marcans, Texas State students and tourists.

The small building on Riverside Drive may be considered a dive spot for some but for others it's a go-to meal.

Herbert’s was founded on May 19, 1976 and “throughout many years of hard work and dedication to their family business, they generated a huge, successful customer base that thrives to this day,” the restaurant says on its website.

“To this day, patrons continue to travel back to our restaurant to revisit that nostalgic experience and enjoy some of the most amazing food in the world,” the restaurant says.

From the restaurant’s “world-famous” salsa to the combination plates, Herbert’s has plenty on the menu to satisfy the hungriest eaters.

What to get:

During our visit to Herbert’s, the world-famous salsa was extra spicy, requiring a nice refreshing glass of sweet tea.

Wanting to sample multiple options, I went with the combination plate, which comes with two cheese enchiladas, a chalupa and guacamole. I added rice and refried beans to the meal. These enchiladas are perfectly cheesy and well seasoned. The chalupa complimented the enchilada with beans, cheese, tomatoes and lettuce. The guacamole provided an extra flair to the plate, and the rice and beans were the perfect finish.

My dining companion went with a simple option: the beef enchilada dinner — two beef enchiladas topped with enchilada gravy served with rice and beans.

With a bigger appetite, I usually choose the Anthony’s Deluxe meal. This feast comes with two cheese enchiladas, one bean and cheese chalupa, one beef or chicken fajita taco mixed with bell peppers and onions served with rice and beans.

Herbert’s has a wide variety of options to choose from. Wanting an appetizer to begin? Consider the chile con queso, bean and cheese nachos, or chicken or beef nachos.

Looking for lighter options? Maybe you’re in the mood for a taco salad or fajita taco salad? Or consider Herbert’s tortilla soup or menudo.

This San Marcos eatery also has fajita dinners to choose from — choose from a beef or chicken fajita meal, fajita combination dinner or beef fajitas topped with ranchero sauce.

Herbert’s also has a chile relleno dinner, flour burrito dinner, taco dinner, tamale dinner and chalupa dinner.

Herbert’s also has plenty of breakfast options, including a wide variety of tacos. The restaurant also has a huevos rancheros plate and a migas breakfast.
