Poppies go back as far as 5,000 B.C. in the Tigris and Euphrates river region in modern day Iraq. The ancient Greeks associated them with Demeter, the goddess of fertility and agriculture and considered the presence of poppies around a field of grain crops a sign of the goddess’ blessing.
