Over the past 12 months, the Price Center Arts Committee has overseen the installation of 10 new pieces of permanent outdoor art in the center’s showcase garden. A special outdoor reception celebrating all the art is set for Saturday, May 7 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. The event is free and open to all, and live music by Gary Taylor and light refreshments will also be featured.

The early butterfly gets the verbena

Swallowtails were early at The Garden Guy’s house this year. Thank goodness I had Superbena verbenas in full bloom. It is as if they had been given the task of announcing the arrival of spring and the butterfly season. March 22, I photographed an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail on Superbana Royale Chambray verbena.

Persian Shield so beautifully exotic: ‘This is the life’

Recently I stumbled across a plant recipe called ‘This is the Life.’ Not only was it a collection of some of my favorite plants, but was like a wake-up call to an old favorite, the Persian Shield. Known botanically as Strobilanthes dyerianus, it is native to Myanmar and has 8-inchlong leaves that are iridescent in shades of purple, lilac and pink with purplemaroon on the undersides. If those colors aren’t awesome enough, the foliage looks as though it has a light coat of silver electroplated to the leaf.
