County to discuss applying for ‘successful status’

The Hays County Commissioner Court will hold a public hearing Tuesday during its regular meeting to discuss its use of countywide voting centers. 

Following Hays County’s use of countywide precincts during the November elections, the county may apply for “Successful Status” of the program through the Office of Secretary of State. 

Following the public hearing, the commissioners will discuss and take possible action on to adopt a Resolution in support of requesting “Successful Status” for Hays County’s application to use of Countywide Polling Place Program in future elections. 

According to the agenda item, “After a pilot election with the use of vote centers under an application with the Office of Secretary of State, a county may apply for ‘Successful Status’ of the program to continue using vote centers in subsequent elections with the passage of a resolution requesting such status from the State.”

In other business, the court will discuss the Hays County Citizens Election Advisory Commission, where they will discuss and take possible action regarding a “summary, clarification of duties and responsibilities and discussion of final membership” of the commission, according to the agenda item.

The commissioners will hold a discussion and take possible action “to authorize the submission of a grant application to the Texas Department of Emergency Management for the Pre-Disaster Mitigation grant funding for the Hays County Community Flood Mitigation Project.”

According to the agenda item, “the Pre-Disaster Mitigation program is designed to reduce the overall risk to the population and structures from future hazard events, while also reducing reliance on federal funding in future disasters. The total project cost is an estimated $10,562,330. The application is due to TDEM through the FEMA eGrants system by Dec. 13 for considerations and Prioritization. Discussion and possible action to authorize the submission of a grant application to the Texas Department of Emergency Management for the Pre-Disaster Mitigation (PDM) grant funding for the Hays County Community Flood Mitigation Project.” 

The court will also discuss and take possible action to adopt a resolution establishing the Hays County Mental Health Court.  

The resolution states that the commissioners court finds that the establishment of a mental health court is in the best interest of the county’s citizens. The resolution states that the Hays County Mental Health Court would be established as a mental health specialty court and requests that county court at law No. 3 serve as the court and enables it to provide services needed by the citizens of Hays County. 

The Hays County Commissioners Court meets Tuesdays on the third floor of the Hays County Historic Courthouse at 9 a.m.
