Hays County Food Bank’s Empty Bowl Project raises over $2,000

Friday, December 6, 2019

This year’s Hays County Food Bank Empty Bowl Project event raised over $2,000 on Tuesday.

The event sponsored by the San Marcos High School Art Department, which provided and crafted the ceramic bowls, raised $2,200 with approximately 70 people in attendance at AquaBrew.

Wednesday’s fundraiser also featured a performance from the San Marcos High School Jazz Ensemble Band.

Rebecca Burkeen, Oscar Moreno and Carolina Sanchez serve chili to Danny Ybarra at Tuesday’s event.

Hays County Food Bank Executive Director Eleanor Owen-Oshan said the money raised will be able to provide 550 meals.

“We can also gas our three vans for three months. We use our vans for food rescue throughout Hays County 6 days a week, transport food to our seven food distributions throughout the county and transport our nutrition education team to their classes at places like the SM Senior Center or the Boys and Girls Club,” Owen-Oshan said in an email. “The Jazz Ensemble Band was fantastic last night and we have been fortunate to have the support of the music department at SMHS each year. We have held the event at Aqua Brew for the last 3 years and it has been a great venue. It is a wonderful community event.”
