SMCISD receives accountability rating

San Marcos CISD received a C accountability score from the Texas Education Agency for the 2018-19 school year.

The school district raised its score, however, from a 72 in 2018 to a 77 in 2019. This is the second year the TEA has rated schools using an A-through-F scale. 

“As a district, we have showed growth earning a 77 score yet we know there is opportunity for growth” SMCISD Deputy Superintendent Dr. Monica Ruiz-Mills said in a statement. “We will continue our focus on improving student outcomes and practices.” 

Bonham Pre-K School and Crockett Elementary School received the highest letter grades in the district with Bs. Both schools received an overall score of 81. 

Five schools received Cs — San Marcos High School, Bowie Elementary School, DeZavala Elementary School, Hernandez Elementary School and Mendez Elementary School. 

Both Miller Middle School and Goodnight Middle School received Ds with Goodnight receiving a 67 and Miller a 64. Travis Elementary School was given the lowest score in the district with a 58— a grade of F.

The TEA used these three criteria to determine a district and school’s rating: Student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps, which shows how well different groups of students within a school are performing. According to the TEA, “A-F accountability uses a variety of indicators such as graduation rates, college, career and military readiness, SAT/ACT scores, and college prep course completion. The majority of a district’s rating is based on indicators other than the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) test.”

SMCISD received a C in each of the three considered categories — student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps.

The district’s overall score improvement is in line with state-wide growth. 

“Performance continues to improve in Texas schools because of the tireless effort of Texas teachers, administrators and staff,” Education Commissioner Mike Morath said in a press release.”
