On Saturday, April 27, the San Marcos community will be abuzz with festivities as two beloved events, Baby Day and Día del Niño, come together to celebrate and honor the children of the community. Baby Day, hosted by Start Smart Hays & Caldwell, and Día del Niño, hosted by Parents as Teachers, are both free, family events dedicated to serving and celebrating the children in our community.

Since the expiration of COVID-19-related provisions requiring states to keep residents enrolled in Medicaid, an estimated 2.1 million Texans have lost their coverage. Texas has by far the highest number of uninsured in the country and has removed significantly more individuals from coverage than any other state.
The family of Malachi Williams is holding a candlelight vigil to honor his life on Thursday evening. Williams died after being shot by San Marcos Police on April 11. Multiple investigations are ongoing into the shooting at this time.
With the rapid growth of the local population, the need for emergency services has increased along with the need to fund those services. An item on the current ballot for the uniform election involves increasing the cap of ad valorem tax to be allocated to the Emergency Service District 9 that funds local EMS services. Early voting started April 22, and the election date is May 4.
“I conclude with sincere condolences to the Malachi Williams family,” said San Marcos Police Chief Stan Standridge in a statement released Monday. “This is not an outcome that anyone wants, including us.”
