Martin Burtscher, a professor in the Department of Computer Science at Texas State University, has never attempted to model an inductively coupled plasma torch using predictive science before. That's what makes the current research project he's involved in so exciting.
The Journey Continues — written five years last month — was started through an encounter with Don Moore, former publisher of the San Marcos Daily Record. After my family arrived in 1989 in San Marcos, I became a faithful reader of the Record and of the column, “Life is Like That” every Sunday. Jerry Bullock, a fellow member at First Baptist Church, McCarty Lane, had written this column for 31 years before his ‘retirement.’ Pastor Gary Smith then continued with a Sunday column, which I also enjoyed reading until it stopped when he moved. Later, I seized the chance and asked Don Moore if I could write the Sunday ‘faith’ column. Moore fired back, “Okay, but it doesn't pay anything, need to be 400 words and I don’t edit or type.”
With Earth Day again coming up this week, let’s talk a little more about it. Going back to last year, it should be noted on that previous Earth Day, over 8.5 million people joined an Earth Day Live livestream and over 100 million people took action for the planet with volunteerism, civic action, teach-ins, and more. This year, in the broadcast site mentioned below, it is hoped they can reach millions more worldwide — and you can be part of it.

April 12 is National Grilled Cheese Day. This recipe elevates the classic to a new level. Even though making sandwiches usually does not involve any cooking, that doesn’t mean layering flavors and selecting quality meats and cheeses involves any less intuition and skill. One of the most popular styles of sandwiches goes by many names, and what you call the sandwich may let others know which part of the country you call home.
Last March, in response to a growing need for connectivity and commerce within the Central Texas corridor, Davis and Patton Jones launched Squaredeal CTX, a digital marketplace for local artists to sell their goods online.
Above, this male Eastern Tiger Swallowtail visits the Supertunia Vista Paradise petunia blossoms. Right, the early April show at The Garden Guy’s house is bold and colorful with Supertunia petunias and Superbells calibrachoa. The Supertunia Vista Paradise petunia is an award winner from North to South including a perfect score all season at Michigan State University.
Petunias for pollinators, could be paradise, at least it seems this way at The Garden Guy’s house. First off, my wife Jan and I are having the most beautiful spring EVER. Not too long ago I wrote a column that planting a fall crop of Supertunias was a great idea. That is proving to be a huge understatement as that October planting survived the winter and is making an incredible display in both the landscape and containers.
In my travels within Texas and around the world, I have been fortunate to see many natural wonders and lots of interesting wildlife.
