On Tuesday, staff, friends, family, fellow officers and co-workers took time to celebrate the 36-year career service award presented to Hays County Lt. Dennis Gutierrez. Through his years with the department, Gutierrez has worn many hats. According to Hays County Sheriff Gary Cutler who presented Gutierrez with a portrait of the Hays County Historic Courthouse, 'He has been a tremendous asset to our agency, and we are truly lucky to have him. Thank you for your dedication.'

Even with school back in session, the San Marcos Public Library continues to provide a wealth of activities for the family. Last week, youngsters learned about Texas animals and made masks in the Growing Up Wild presentation and craft event. The next Growing Up Wild session is at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7.

School Resource Officers complete safety course

Sheriff Gary Cutler commends nine members of the Hays County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer unit for graduating in class number two of the Texas School Safety Center–School Based Law Enforcement master’s program. This 4-day course covered a multitude of sessions that covered advanced topics like understanding the development of the adolescent brain, bullying/cyberbullying, mental health issues in today’s youth and suicide prevention and intervention. This course reinforces the dedication of our SROs to better serve the students and staff members at our Hays County schools.
