The Sights and Sounds of Christmas held its tree lighting on Wednesday at time of press. Officially, performances start today and continue throughout the holidays. Left, youngsters are dressed in the garb of ancient Bethlehem during the recent Veteran's Day Parade that offered visitors a taste of sights and sounds to come. Below, left, the old red truck is a symbol of Christmas. Below, right, music is usually part of the annual festivities associated with Sights and Sounds of Christmas.

Central Texas food banks are under pressure from state's high food insecurity

Twice a week starting around 6:30 a.m., drivers head to a parking lot in South Austin. Once there, volunteers direct them into orderly rows, where they are ushered forward one-by-one to open their doors and receive a bundle of free food.

San Marcos High School’s Musical Theatre program was recently awarded the Broadway Experience for Youth Grant. The BEY award comes through the education and engagement team at Texas Performing Arts. The grant gives these Rattlers in the musical theatre program and their directors free tickets to a performance of 'Wicked' at the Bass Concert Hall in Austin in March 2024. The BEY grant will also provide an additional educational experience related to the show.

SMCISD De Zavala Elementary first-graders spent Tuesday at the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment. They visited the center's aquarium, toured Spring Lake on glass-bottom boats, learned about the water's ecosystem and wrapped up the day with a picnic.

ECONOMIST: Literacy, workforce

Literacy is defined as “the ability to understand, evaluate, use and engage with written texts to participate in society, to achieve one’s goals, and to develop one’s knowledge and potential” by the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC—part of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)). Through my economist lens, another aspect of literacy is that it greatly enhances job opportunities for individuals and provides some near-term relief to the workforce shortage.
