San Marcos celebrates the life of legendary citizen Ollie Hargis Giles

Ollie Wilburn Hargis Giles was born in San Marcos on Aug. 5, 1933, the only child to parents L.C. Hargis and Enola Hollins (daughter of George Mose and Etta Lee Hollins). Though born during the Great Depression, Giles would say that she had a happy childhood surrounded by a family and community who loved her and whom she also loved.

KZSM — Crafting a creative message

KZSM.org expresses and celebrates the distinctive flavor of our community. Our newest live broadcast, “Martian Message,” airs from 6-7 p.m. on the third and fourth Sunday of the month. The show is created by the eclectic cooperative Studio San Martian. Located at 1904 Ranch Rd 12 # 108, the space is much more than an art gallery. According to owner Kelsey Huckaby, the group serves “not only artists, but community members with different interests, including music, gardening, health and wellness, yoga. Anything that we see as something positive and beneficial that brings people together and helps people express themselves in a safe and fun environment.”

VFW helps veterans

Maurice T. Suttles VFW Post 3413 Auxiliary member Laura Davis worked with Post Commander Stephanie Brown, Post Members, Veterans Service Officers Jude Prather and Michael Hernandez, and the Hays County Food Bank to provide a mobile food distribution for veterans and their families. Twenty registered participants were planned for. The food was picked up at the food bank and donated by members of the VFW and placed into proper packaging. The city of San Marcos and many local organizations donated three pallets of water and several cases of flavored water that the San Marcos Fire Department delivered to the post for distribution.

New Rotarian sworn in

The Rotary Club of Wimberley welcomes a new member, Ermias Ketema Gebremeskel. Gebremeskel is from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and holds degrees in Biology, Business Administration and Tour Operations. His company, Stunning Ethiopia Tours, can be found on Tripadvisor. He is proud to now call Wimberley home. Gebremeskel met his future wife, Carrie Campbell, during a literacy mission trip in Ethiopia coordinated between the Rotary Club of Wimberley and the Davis Moon Project (DMP). DMP is a nongovernmental organization working in Ethiopia to increase literacy and was founded by a former Wimberley Rotarian, Sonja Simmons. Gebremeskel has also recently joined Sonja on the DMP Board of Directors to help improve conditions in his country of origin.
