St. Mark's celebrates 150th anniversary

When the members of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church gather for worship on Sunday, May 5, they’ll not only be observing St. Mark’s Day— an event they postponed from April 25—but they’ll also be celebrating their 150th year in San Marcos. They will mark the occasion with a single service at 10 that morning, followed by a reception where members and guests can view a commemorative slide show and enjoy exhibits depicting the church’s history in the community. Children, too, will have an opportunity to celebrate with a special 150th Anniversary birthday cake along with crafts and activities exploring the number and theme of 150. Just how big is 150 anyway? They’ll get to answer that question.

Unhoused population in county at highest total measured

It is vital to have accurate data on those that are unhoused in the community; the reasons for being unhoused, the amount of time without shelter, age and information on mental illness, substance abuse disorder and veteran status, are all critical to receiving federal funding and identifying the type of prevention programs needed to minimize this issue. The Homeless Coalition of Hays County, which is the local chapter of the Texas Homeless Network, conducts a Point in Time Count annually. The PIT count is a snapshot of the current data related to the unhoused that is gathered on a single night, which was Jan. 25. There were 246 total unhoused people found in Hays County in 2024 — the highest number found across the four years the survey has been conducted. This is done by other factions across the Texas Homeless Network (237 of the 254 counties) to develop statewide data related to the unhoused.

Heritage Home Tour to highlight Wonder World cabin

The cabin called the Bevers House was named for Mark Bevers, the ex-cowboy who first discovered the cave. Most of its original bricks remain intact as does the cabin’s distinctive architectural design.

Lest anyone think that Wonder World Park is some sort of recent establishment with a slightly schmaltzy name, think again, because this is actually one of the most historic nature tourism destinations and oldest enduring business names in Texas.

What drinks are the best for runners

One of my morning rituals is a cup of coffee. Talking with other people it seems that I am not alone drinking a morning cup of coffee to start the day. The primary reason given by people is that it “wakes them up.” For these coffee drinkers, the first cup of coffee in the morning acts as a stimulant to be wide awake and ready to meet the challenges of the day. The primary ingredient in coffee that seems to trigger this response is caffeine. There are some studies that promote coffee as a way to keep active over a longer period of time. For marathon runners that is exactly what they are looking for. It got to the point that too much coffee [caffeine] was a banned substance in the Olympic drug protocol restrictions.
